How Soon Can I Get Pregnant After My Abortion?

Dear MYA Network,

Two months ago I terminated my first pregnancy and now I’m worried about the side effects that could affect the next pregnancy in the future.  So I would like to ask how soon I can get pregnant again?  I’ve been on birth control since the abortion.  How can I know that the procedure of termination is complete?   Thank you for your answer in advance.

L.L.

Dear L.L.

Rest assured that your uterus is already back to normal. Generally speaking, you can get pregnant right away. So, when the time is right for you to get pregnant, you can stop taking the birth control and start trying.

It sounds like everything went normally, and the procedure is complete.  From what you mentioned, it seems that you had a procedure done, you weren’t told of any concerns, and you were started on birth control. If you want added reassurance you can check a pregnancy test (which should be negative by now), or you can reach out to the practice or clinic where you had your procedure done.

I hope this is helpful to you. Sometimes ending a pregnancy can help you to put things in place that you need to welcome a baby.  I hope this is the case for you, and the next time you see a positive pregnancy test you are filled with joy.

Warmly,

Dr. Joan
